Teething: Facts and Fiction

Teething is the process by which an infant’s teeth sequentially appear by breaking through the gums. Though the process of teething is sometimes referred to as “cutting teeth”, when teeth emerge through the gums they do not cut through the flesh. Instead, special chemicals are released within the body that causes some cells in the gums to die and separate, allowing the teeth to come through.

Teething has long been regarded as an unpleasant experience for infants and their parents. Many parents, child carers and health professionals still believe that teething signs and symptoms and in particular, teething pain, should be managed.

Teething was known as “dentition difficilis,” Latin for pathologic dentition or difficult dentition.

Even though teething is a normal part of infant development, surprisingly little is known about the causes and management of teething signs and symptoms. It is widely believed that pain and other discomfort associate with tooth eruption in infants should and can be managed by pharmacological and non-pharmacological means. Cheapest Baby Food

Cheapest Baby Food

Are you looking for the cheapest brand of baby food. No mother wants to admit that she is looking for thecheapest baby food. We all want to give our baby the highest quality of nutrition that our money can afford and most often that it cannot afford. What could really compare to feeding your child.

Money doesn’t matter that much. I know one thing that my husband wouldn’t do for either of our kids was buy any other type of diaper than Pampers. We’d gotten a large bag of Huggies as a gift with our first child once and while diapering her a few times, the little Velcro broke away from the diaper and from that moment on, he would not have it, no matter the cost and he remained true to that until our second daughter was born and out of diapers. So I know about making sacrifices for your child. But sometimes, you have to, we have to become realistic in what we can and cannot afford to do. With baby food being so expensive these days, we have to think of ways to save money but make sure that our kids are getting the proper nutrition that he or she needs. Now here is a thought that many folks either don’t know or just think about. Most generic brand and top brands of the same item are manufactured in the same plant. Sure a lesser quality ingredient or part or supply  might be used for the generic brand, the item is still practically the same. One thing that should give a mother piece of mind though is that the generic brand of baby food was probably made on the assembly line or conveyor belt right next to the Gerber organic baby food. Maybe some of that goodness splashed and landed right into to your baby’s jar of food. That’s a joke but you get the point that maybe, just maybe all of the food is the same.

Cheapest baby food

The cheapest baby food is most likely the store brand of the store that you are shopping in. When you compare prices, it comes up the cheapest everytime. Wal-mart probably has the cheapest baby food of all brands. There are times that I’m in a close-out store like Big Lots thinking I’m getting the best price and the next I’m in Wal-mart, I might see the same item for a dollar less. One dollar is not that much but the stands that Wal-mart, although its not people’s favorite place to shop anymore, is still sporting the lowest prices around, save the Dollar Tree. Now there’s a thought, look in the Dollar Stores, i.e. the Dollar Tree. If they have baby food, no matter what the brand is, it will be for one dollar. Depending on how old your child is, the food that you are buying for the whole family may be the cheapest way to go. When my kids were babies, if I bought apples at the store for the rest of the family, I fed it to the babies. I’d just chop it up into small pieces, boil it until it was soft, add bananas or other soft fruit like peaches and grapes and feed it to the baby. That way, I didn’t add to my grocery for the week. There are several ways to be frugal about buying baby food, you just have to think outside of the box a little bit. Speaking of box, instant cereal for babies is very cheap. Also consider buying baby food in bulk to save money. Always check the expiration dates while you’re checking the price. A healthy baby is priceless!

Girls in Team Sports Gain Benefits Far Beyond Health and Fitness

Though long espoused as crucial for the development of young men, involvement in sports is highly beneficial for girls as well. Young women involved in sports are more likely to achieve academically, have increased self-esteem, experience a higher level of health and wellness, learn crucial skills for entering a competitive workforce, and enjoy the social rewards that accompany working as a team and having fun with others.

With the availability of girls’ sports increasing, it is important that young women be encouraged to participate and enjoy the higher quality of life that sports help them achieve.

The most obvious benefit of involvement in sports is a healthier body. All children involved in athletics experience a decrease in the likelihood of developing obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and several other complications linked to a sedentary lifestyle.

For young women, in particular, there is a strong correlation between adequate exercise and a decreased risk for breast cancer and osteoporosis, both diseases that typically affect women. Studies also reveal that girls involved in extracurricular activities are less likely to experience an unwanted pregnancy. Being physically active when young increases the likelihood that a person will live an active lifestyle as an adult. Read the rest of this entry »

Autism Recovery – Non-blood vs. Blood testing and Autism

Image via Wikipedia

When starting a biomedical treatment approach for Autism, testing is an integral part. The types of lab testing available vary widely. I discuss organic acid tests (OAT) and even more so I talk about organic acid tests from Great Plains Labs which I use in my practice often.

You can think of testing in two main categories when you are considering it for your child, non-blood testing and blood testing. Finding out whether the child has had any blood work done previously is first and foremost in my practice when discussing this issue with parents.

Next, if they have done blood testing, I want to know how the experience was for the child. Each child responds to differently to testing, one child may handle it fine while another finds it very traumatic.

Blood testing can be a stressful experience, to the point where certain children have required 3 or 4 adults to hold them down to complete the testing.

And yet we know that it can be necessary at times to get blood testing done to find out important data for the biomedical treatment of your child. However, blood testing when you are just beginning a biomedical treatment approach is not always required. Read the rest of this entry »
