Emotional health is a key component of physical health. Everyone knows that, but we sometimes forget just how important it is.

Most of us are conditioned to look only for physical causes for illnesses and chronic conditions. Yet without changing the emotions and behavior that are contributing to the problem, even if we get well, we are likely to relapse.

So the answer is to get counseling, but that seldom happens. We may know we need it, but many of us fail to obtain it for a variety of reasons. The “mental health” stigma is still strong for many people. And some of us simply do not have access to counseling.

Cost may be a big factor. Disability or lack of transportation can make it hard to get to a counselor’s office.

Or we may be so booked up with work and family that we simply cannot find the time. It is easy to put off making an appointment that could tie up several hours of your day when you include transportation time and possible delays at the counselors office.

Privacy concerns can be quite strong and valid, especially if you live in a small, conservative town. You may not have any deep, dark secrets, but you still want to keep your personal and family business private. It can be hard to find a counselor you trust when your social life and/or livelihood, and perhaps that of your family members or other loved ones, may seem to be at stake.

It can even be hard to get off work or away from the family without explaining why—or lying. So what do you do?

One new option that the Internet makes possible is online counseling. With today’s easy chat systems you can chat live with an expert far away. No one else has to know, and the cost can be quite reasonable. That could literally be a lifesaver for some.

Unlike with physician referrals, you can choose the online counseloryourself from a directory offering a wide range of background, experience, and areas of specialty and showing names, photos and credentials.

You weigh the options, and you make the choice. If you try someone and do not care for them, there are no strings. Just pick someone else. (No hurt feelings from a physician or friend who recommended them.)

You can pay for counseling online securely, easily, and privately. With services like PayPal, you can pay on line without even a telltale charge on your credit card bill.

You can get your questions answered online by experts and even compare answers from different counselors. Having experienced cluelessness, hostility, and even breach of confidentiality with in-person counseling myself, I would definitely use this kind of service. It just makes good sense.

As online medical care has become feasible, so has online counseling. It’s about time, too. This could help many, many people, and even save lives.

From a spiritual perspective, when we talk about physical health, the question arises: are you your body or are you something other than your body?

And you may ask why should we consider the spiritual aspect when looking at physical health?

The answer is simple. Without a focus on our spiritual health, as well as on our body, the latter will not shape up as well as it could. A more holistic approach to the self is vital on the road to physical health. This article seeks to explain why this is so.

As implied above we are not our body, but rather we are spiritual beings who are simply caretakers of our bodies whilst in the physical vehicle. The body is the temple as they say, and it houses our spirit but it is not our spirit, or essential nature. This is why Sri Ramana Maharshi, a great Indian sage who became enlightened at the age of 16, said, “To identify oneself with the body and yet seek happiness is like attempting to cross a river on the back of an alligator. In truth, you are Spirit.”

The key is to be conscious of this truth, and focus both on healing ourselves of any illness and conditions, as well as healing those aspects that hinder our awareness of the spiritual being that we are. And what does the latter mean? It means enquiring into ourselves, questioning ourselves at a deeper level, and as we do, we start the journey towards wholeness of body, mind and spirit.

Through the spiritual perspective we begin to see how we view ourselves with a vision that is fragmented which leads to, at best, fragmented health. But with knowledge of the greater Self that each of us is, we begin to allow this Self to take the helm and bring wholeness into our life. You could say that the real Self pulls all the strings of the balloons we try to keep in the air together into one hand, whereas with a fragmented view of life (mind, body and soul as separate compartments) the strings are in separate hands and may even be tied to our legs or arms!

So as we open our mind to the spiritual dimension of life, we begin to develop what is known as Qi (pronounced chi) or Chi.

But first of all, what is Chi and why should we develop it?

In Oriental traditions, Chi is the life force, or vital energy, that permeates the world, all beings, and even places and buildings. In yogic traditions it is known as prana. In its proper balanced state, Chi moves through the space it occupies, whether a body or a place, freely and unhindered. But if there is some blockage then it is hampered in its flowing and the imbalance can lead to ill health or an uncomfortable environment.

In western countries now also, the concept of balancing this vital energy is seen as important in achieving a life of calm and happiness. I was recently very heartened to see that a T’ai Chi course I attended in London, UK, had a high number of attendees, most of them participants over 50-60 years of age, some over 70 years of age, who had been attending for 2-3 years continuously.

Another similar practice is Qi Gong (pronounced Chi Gung), which is similar to T’ai Chi, as well as acupuncture and acupressure which are said to unblock the flow of Chi in a person’s body.

Each of us has a limit to the energy we have available during a lifetime. This is proven by the fact that we will all someday die! Our bodies are not immortal. However I believe that we were meant to, and are capable of, living longer lives if we care-take our spiritual life as much as we care-take our physical life.

From a physical perspective, we can make choices about how we live, our lifestyle, our diet, and our emotional wellbeing, all of which will use up more or less energy depending on these choices. Thus for example, if we eat junk food with few nutrients, we can expect to shorten our life span and illness will be a more frequent visitor.

In this scenario you could say that the body is having to work harder and to fight harder than it should for its survival. On the other hand, if we eat nutritious, fresh foods and keep active, then we can reasonably expect to have a longer life. Of course there may be other aspects at play, such as hereditary factors, but you get the general gist.

Well, this is all well and good, and logical, isn’t it? Most of us know what is good for our health and what is not, but is it easy to pay heed to this advice? No. This is because if we operate our lives from the level of the mind by telling ourselves what we should and shouldn’t do we are ultimately in a losing battle because this only works for the short-term, and constant effort to ‘keep going’ is required.

Yes, we can have discipline. Yes, we can have will power. But have you noticed how much effort this all involves and how difficult it is to maintain? Even if we do succeed to adopt a healthier diet or lifestyle through primarily will power, the effort involved takes it toll.

This is because there is usually always a feeling of some negative emotion underneath, some guilt, or fear about ourselves, and this is the spur for us to change. But negative emotion as a motivational factor has its negative impacts.

One being the energy required to maintain the ‘corrective actions’ and another that the negative emotion is never usually appeased so satisfaction eludes us. Have you noticed that even when we do achieve something (a health benefit, improved lifestyle or whatever) it’s never enough? There’s always something else that is ‘wrong’ and needs to be ‘dealt with’?

Thus the question arises: how can we live a life of health and satisfaction given that we are human beings with many challenges and stresses, especially in the difficult times we find ourselves in thesedays?

The answer is to focus on our spiritual life. This means going beyond the mind, the ego, and into the space where the real Self resides, and finding out who you really are. There are many resources available to help us in self-enquiry, not least http://www.soulalert.com, which I helped to launch recently, but also many books, and other online videos and articles that can springboard our whole life into a fresher, more holistic dimension.

As we progress along this path of self-enquiry, greater peace and satisfaction are experienced, and ultimately we begin to see that there is nothing wrong. The Universe and all that it contains is perfect as it is.

With greater insights into life as it really is (rather than as we think it is) our Chi becomes more free-flowing and health improves. This may require practice and yes, some will power. But gradually as we raise our Consciousness, this becomes the director of our lives (rather than mind or will power) and we naturally align with our own good, making instinctive choices for our well being.

We begin to simply know what we should be doing, and the choices we should make, and conflict and confusion subside. Life begins to flow more, with less effort.

Where illness is experienced, we may be able to accept more readily the difficulties and suffering this brings, rather than resisting it and fighting it. If we are sick, it is far preferable to accept it, than to fight it. Why fight something that has already happened? Moreover we are not providing ourselves with a fair fight, but one which cannot be won, since we cannot turn the clock back and undo what is already happening.

As Byron Katie, the Founder of ‘The Work’, says, “Arguing with ‘what is’ is like teaching a cat to bark.” When we fight illness, we are essentially fighting ourselves and robbing ourselves of peace of mind. When we accept ‘what is’ we have a far better chance of healing.

So we come back age-old wisdom of accepting ourselves first, on every level, and in that space, we learn to be kinder to ourselves, and forgive. This is the spiritual journey. And this is also the foundation to greater physical wellness.-

One of the “new” nutrients you often hear recommended these days is Omega 3 fatty acid. Omega 3 is found in various foods, but an especially rich source of Omega 3 is fish oil.

Fish oil has been found by researchers to do the following things:

Alleviate or prevent depression

Improve brain function and help protect the brain from Alzheimers

Help brain development and prevent ADD and ADHD in children.

Regulate cholesterol levels

Prevent certain kinds of cancer

Help heal injuries faster and promote faster recovery from illness

Prevent heart disease

Slow aging

Omega 3 used to be plentiful in our diets, back when cattle were grass fed, chickens ranged freely in the barnyard, and vegetables were grown without pesticides and artificial fertilizers and were allowed to ripen in the sun. Today’s factory farmed foods, however, tend to lack or be extremely low in Omega 3. The easiest way to replace it is by taking a good quality fish oil.

Fish oil is extracted from oil-rich fish: cod, salmon, tuna, sardines, herring, mackerel and others. It contains polyunsaturated fat, Omega 3, that the body needs but cannot produce on its own. The three main types of Omega 3 fatty acids are a-Linolenic Acid (ALA), Eicosapentaenoic Acid (ELA) and Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA).

In the past, people took codfish oil, which is rich in Omega 3, to alleviate the symptoms of arthritis and prevent rickets. Now we know that fish oils can do much more to improve and protect our health.

You can move from being a comfort eater to being someone who eats a healthy diet with ease. The problem many people face when they eat for comfort is that they are using the food to push down uncomfortable feelings. This works temporarily but that feeling will spring up again making it necessary for the comfort eater to overeat again.

The challenge most comfort eaters face is that they are scared of facing the uncomfortable feelings. It actually feels safer to eat than to let the uncomfortable thought fully develop in their head.

What you will actually find however is that most uncomfortable feelings break apart and lose their power when you simply allow them to play through in your head. For instance, you might fear that your boss is going to give you too much work and overwhelm you so in order to avoid this uncomfortable thought you eat and the foods you choose are quick carbs such as a baked good or refined carbohydrate.

An option is to ask yourself if you absolutely know that it is true that your boss is going to give you too much work. The reality is that at this moment you really don’t know what your boss will do and you are creating the whole scary scenario. This understanding can calm you down and allow you to consider what you might do if your boss does give you extra work and how you might handle the situation in a better way.

With practice you will find it easy to defuse your need for comfort eating by allowing the uncomfortable thought to play out. When you do this you will find that you are finally free to move into a healthier eating pattern and easily avoid comfort foods.

Though long espoused as crucial for the development of young men, involvement in sports is highly beneficial for girls as well. Young women involved in sports are more likely to achieve academically, have increased self-esteem, experience a higher level of health and wellness, learn crucial skills for entering a competitive workforce, and enjoy the social rewards that accompany working as a team and having fun with others.

With the availability of girls’ sports increasing, it is important that young women be encouraged to participate and enjoy the higher quality of life that sports help them achieve.

The most obvious benefit of involvement in sports is a healthier body. All children involved in athletics experience a decrease in the likelihood of developing obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and several other complications linked to a sedentary lifestyle.

For young women, in particular, there is a strong correlation between adequate exercise and a decreased risk for breast cancer and osteoporosis, both diseases that typically affect women. Studies also reveal that girls involved in extracurricular activities are less likely to experience an unwanted pregnancy. Being physically active when young increases the likelihood that a person will live an active lifestyle as an adult.

Studies indicate that young people who are involved in athletic activities achieve higher grades and are more likely to complete high school and college. This may be because adequate exercise improves mental acuity.

It may also be attributed to the fact that children in sports are less likely to abuse illegal substances, such as drugs and alcohol. Steering clear of these substances helps young people stay focused on their academics and free of dangerous distractions. There is also evidence that young people who play sports are less likely to start smoking.

Women who are physically active generally have higher self esteem. They experience a better body image than their sedentary peers and exhibit more confidence. They are also less likely to develop symptoms of depression. The feeling of accomplishment that athletics can garner, having a healthy body, and feeling strong and capable all help young women feel good about themselves and experience a higher quality of life.

As more women enter the workforce, there are many job skills they can acquire from participation in competitive sports. Young women can learn to work as a team, to value a person’s skills and abilities, to take orders from a captain or supervisor, and acquire the confidence in their abilities necessary to success in a competitive job market.

In addition to all the quantifiable and tangible benefits of sports participation for young women, there is also the immeasurable social reward. Sports offer girls an opportunity to socialize with people of varying abilities and experiences.

Through sports, young women can find positive role models. They can learn the importance of working hard, working together, and being fair. Athletics offer children a myriad of social interaction and the delight that comes with playing a game and having fun.

With all the benefits of participating in sports for young girls, it is important to provide opportunity and encouragement to all young women to compete and play. Athletics and competition are an integral part of any child’s growth and development, and young women are certainly no exception.

Holiday stress relief could come from banishing holidays, but there has got to be at least one holiday, maybe Groundhog day, that you like.

So maybe it is not the holiday that brings stress, but the thoughts about the holidays, and if I change the thoughts, then I change the physiology in my body, which is what stress is, right, an uncomfortable physiology in my body?

(Stress physiology happens fast, perhaps four times as fast as I can blink my eyes, and has a purpose, and it is not designed to be a habit).

Not sure about you, but when I was a little guy and school started and football started and the leaves turned colors, I felt excitement about the time of year, and looked forward to it, and as I remember delivering the Minneapolis Star Tribune on my early morning route some 50 or so years ago, I feel that same excitement. So that memory of events that happened over 1/2 century ago changes my body today.

That one half century old memory still brings the physiology of pleasure to my body, and that process is the key to holiday stress tips.

But back to the story. As a little guy, when I heard the first Christmas carol on the radio or TV, I felt excitement too, about Christmas, and that physiology was based on an anticipation of what might happen.

Our economic reality was not good, so I knew that I would not get a mountain of presents, but I still felt the excitement, and that is what we would now call eustress or good stress, linked to a positive anticipation.

I still get that tingle when I hear Christmas carols, although they start much earlier in the year now.

And then I change that positive anticipation, that eustress, to distress, by adding in many thoughts about responsibilities I know have including visits to the family and how do I keep my business moving ahead and attend to the holidays for example, and how do I handle my wife’s expectations about what the holidays should look like.

For her it involves lots of family and parties and chatter, ect.

For me it involves quite contemplation, oftentimes done in private.

There is a collision of lifestyles, and when I think about hers, I feel anxious, so it is the thought of fall and fall colors and football and Christmas carols which brings an eager anticipation and the thought about large gatherings of noisy people, even though I like the people, which brings the feeling of anxiety.

Holiday Stress Relief Tip #1

Change the thought to change the feeling. And do it on a schedule.

Is there some reason that I must feel anxious more than I feel good, since it is my thoughts that bring my physiology?

No reason at all, so I believe that we should schedule our thoughts about gratitude, for example, for every five minutes, for at least two heart beats.

That way I get my body used to the idea that it can feel good, whenever it wants to.

Now this is not a rapturous, transcendent kind of pleasure, it is a quiet contentment, and I see no reason not to have it on demand.

After all, I had that kind of physiology as a kid, but got trained out of it, as I grew up.

Time to remember that I can feel a quiet contentment and still take care of my responsibilities. Feeling good is not limited to payday, or Friday before the weekend, or that special date, or TV show, it is ok to feel good anytime.

It is actually the norm for humans to feel ok, the stress response should happen when I need to move quickly into fight, flee, or freeze action, and then I should rest while the feast is cooked.

And a tool to help with this process since it is so easy to get locked into the worst case scenario mindset?

Holiday Stress Relief Tip #2

Learn heart rate variability biofeedback. Heart rate variability biofeedback is a powerful tool that gives real time feedback about how your thinking impacts your physiology, and how fast that happens too, using a computer.

As you learn how fast you can move from an affiliative, cooperative heart centered physiology, you learn how easy it is to switch back to that physiology, so your holiday stress relief is actually done heart beat by heart beat, and that is at the slow end of the scale, because you will get trained in a cue thought to use with the Freeze Frame practice that works at the speed of thought.

For example, when I first heard of Heartmath in 2000, and bought it, I created a thought where I pictured my children, Shane, and Hannah Marie, as best I could, and placed that image inside my chest next to my heart, and the brain in my heart (yes, your heart has its own nervous system) learned that it was to get itself very coherent and feel a lot of love whenever I had that thought.

So I practice that thought routinely over the course of the day, to feel love, because that feeling of love feels good and is far healthier for me than distress over their various kiddie crimes.

Why create distress unnecessarily over kiddie crimes that happened in the past, or have not yet happened?

I prefer to solve problems from a place of eustress rather than distress and heart rate variability biofeedback is the tool for eustress.

Are you an athlete seeking to perform at your peak, or a student preparing for the Graduate Records Exam, Law School Admissions Test?

Heart rate variability biofeedback is an excellent tool to open the higher perceptual centers of the brain for brainstorming.

Yes, there is Research Proof

Heart rate variability biofeedback has grown out of research in the new field of neurocardiology, which is the study of the heart’s own nervous system. The heart can learn and make decisions on its own, it senses a number of things, and sends much more data up about emotional issues than the brain sends down.

So regulating your hearts coherence is a must do for holiday stress relief.

Oh, it took me all of six one-half hour practices to get a good solid feel for the process, which means I no longer need the computer to complete the eustress creation, on demand, on any given heart beat.

Want to check it out?

(Don’t forget that one of the leading brain fitness gurus, Alvaro Fernandez, at Sharp Brains, rates heart rate variability as the best stress management tool).

I always jump out of joy when my clients compliment me. Saying my program has helped the to improve their health positively. And has also made their lives much happy.

This is especially true of my Fibromyalgia program feedback. The same theme is often repeated – my program helped where nothing else did, starting with the fact that I consider fibromyalgia to be a medical condition.

It is no longer surprising to me that many doctors STILL don’t treat fibromyalgia, whose main symptoms include chronic pain and fatigue, as the disease that it is. They often misdiagnose it as depression (this is a symptom of fibromyalgia – not the cause), if they even diagnose it at all. Many still believe that the patient is making it up or it’s some sort of psychosomatic cause.

The daughter of one such client wrote to me, telling me that her mother, who was suffering from some form of dementia and was being tested for Alzheimer’s was also suffering from fibromyalgia. The pain medication prescribed wasn’t working and seemed to actually contribute to the mental confusion her mother was experiencing.

This happened after following my program regularly. Her mother’s memory problem and language lapses have also been jointly cured with joint pain and chronic fatigue dissipate.

How could a program intended for one condition treat another? In short, this can happen with many of my programs – many of them are designed to provide the body with the proper amounts of oxygen. It’s understandable that more oxygen to one area will also mean more oxygen to another.

In this instance, however, it’s more than that. This is because another symptom of fibromyalgia, while not as well known, can still be just as exasperating to deal with. This is called fibro fog. Sufferers of fibro fog can experience one or more of the following: short-term memory loss, clouded thinking, intermittent language lapses and difficulty concentrating.

It is just a mystery. Just like fibromyalgia fibro fog too doesn’t have a definite cause.

Many theories are formulated by experts, but the so far proposed theories are lack of oxygen to the brain, lack of delta wave sleep (deepest level of sleep) and side effects of certain medications (among them, ironically, medicines to treat fibromyalgia pain).

When one cannot go into deep sleep, the brain will not be able to sort through all the details that is kept in the conscious mind. And this can lead to memory loss. You can’t say that the memory is affected but it is the difficulty remember the detail. Pain from fibromyalgia can be caused from lack of sleep.

While the above symptoms of fibro fog do seem to mimic Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia, one should note that fibro fog is a physical symptom of fibromyalgia and is not a degenerative disease. This means that if one can clear up fibromyalgia symptoms, this one will dissipate as well and “normal” thinking will occur again.

Other methods include sleeping well, you can try a fan or a “white noise.” Start taking notes – carry around a small notebook or PDA and take notes often. Not only will you have the information available later but the act of writing helps commit the thought to memory. Repeating words is also quite helpful.

You can also seek the consultation of a physician to rule out the possibility of Alzheimer’s or any other form of dementia. Apart from this you can choose a quiet place to work you should avoid all distractions.

You can also involve in games like crossword puzzles, jigsaw puzzles and chess. This will activate your brain a lot and helps you with your memory and concentration.

You can also exercise on a regular basis as it is highly recommended. But moderate exercise is the requirement. You can get your blood pumping to get that oxygen to the brain. Rigorous exercising can actually make ibromyalgia pain worse.

My programs are all natural and will definitely work. The breathing and relaxation exercises in my fibromyalgia program is uniquely created for the treatment. Moreover, if you also affected by any kind of dementia the you should make use of my dementia program which about to be launched.

There is no worse feeling that a person can have than that of anxiety. It can be a very debilitating condition that can take over a person’s life very quickly if they do not learn how to treat it.

Here we will take a peek at some things that people can do to help themselves learn how to treat anxiety on their own. This may work for some, but there are times that you may need the help of a professional.

Breathing techniques are one way that people try to calm the body’s reactions to the triggers of an anxiety attack. Doing some deep breathing can be an easy form of relief for some people as long as they make sure that they perform the exercises properly. Rushing through them will not help you in the least.

Exercise is another thing that people have tried, and some have found that it too can be a huge help when learning how to treat anxiety. Try stretching exercises or Yoga as these are ways that help the body and the mind relax and focus on other things than what is happening. This can be the best way to calm yourself down which in turn can prevent matters from getting any worse than they are.

Other people have found that there is a lot of truth in the claims that come with regards to the relaxing qualities of herbal remedies. Teas are one of the most commonly used herbal remedies that is used today. People use these for all sorts of reasons, and anxiety is one of them.

Trying a cup of Chamomille tea, which is know for the relaxing properties that it contains can be the perfect way for a person to get the relief that they need. It may not work for everyone but it is something that can be tried. You may be pleasantly surprised by the results that you see.

Knowing things that cause an anxiety attack can also be a helpful way to keep them away. Caffeine is one of the most common triggers of anxiety when it comes to food. This means that coffee and chocolate are two very big no-no`s for those that suffer from anxiety.

Other foods contain caffeine as well, but the list is huge, so you should pay attention to the labels that are on the foods that you eat and see if they may be a culprit when it comes to your problems.

One never knows when an anxiety attack will hit them. You can be in bed trying to get sleep and all of a sudden you will feel it coming. If this is something that you have experienced and are unsure of what to do, it has been said that getting out of bed is the best place to start. Once out of the bed try to do something that relaxes you, maybe some calming music or a book, whatever calms you down.

Times have changed over the years and this is something that a person can find out a lot about if they take the time to look. This can be some of the best invested time that you spend if it provides you with relief from this devastating disorder.

Finding effective methods for treating anxiety is critical if you want to stop panic attacks and anxiety for good so you can start living a normal life again. Wouldn’t it be great to be able to go to social functions, complete your grocery shopping or simply drive in the car without fear of an anxiety attack?

If you’re tired of living with stress and the negative effects it has on your entire life, there are some things you can do to cure stress. You don’t have to live a stressful life.

There are methods available that can help you to cure your stress fast and naturally. Instead of suffering physically and emotionally from all the stress in your life, let’s take a look at some excellent tips to help you to reduce stress quickly and in a natural manner.

Figure Out What Your Stressors Are

You don’t need drugs to cure stress. One of the natural things you can do to cure stress quickly is to start figuring out what the stressors are in your life. This is one of the most important things you need to do.

You have to identify the things in your life causing you stress so you can eliminate them. List the top things that stress you out and see what things you can eliminate to cut back on your stress.

Avoid Being Late

Constantly being late is something that is very stressful. You end up rushing to get somewhere on time, but this is something you can correct. You can cure stress easily and quickly by learning to be on time. Stop being late if you want to eliminate stress. You’ll find that your entire day will be less stressful if you avoid being late.

Don’t Procrastinate

Procrastination is easy to do. We all let things pile up, and then we end up stressing out. You can cure stress by avoiding procrastination. Don’t put things off, but learn to take care of them quickly to avoid the stress procrastination brings.

Get Organized

Start getting organized if you want to reduce stress quickly and naturally. The more disorganized you are, the more stress you’ll have in your life. If you take the time to organize things in your life, you’ll begin to remove stress and life will become much easier for you.

Avoid People That Stress You Out

If there are people in your life that stress you out, avoid them. This is a great way to cure stress. You don’t have to be around people who cause you more stress. Sure, you could confront them, but it is a better option to eliminate them from your life.

Take Time to Relax

Make sure that you take time to relax each day if you want to cure stress. Take small breaks throughout your day at work. Get outdoors and enjoy the fresh air. Find time to laugh. There should be time in your day when you relax. Even five minutes of relaxation can help to relief from stress quickly.

Start Exercising Regularly

Exercise is one of the best ways to cure stress naturally. If you want to cure stress, exercise really works, which is why it’s often recommended. As you become healthier, it will cut down on the stress of your body, and exercising produces chemicals that help to cure stress within your body as well.
