Your Questions About Health Ideas For Children

Paul asks…

What are some children health issues that are serious enough to have a large charity opened for it?

About to open a charity for a children health issue, however, I do not know what to back. So if you have any idea of a serious health issue for children that needs backing, any recommendation, then feel free to let me know.

admin answers:

Why not pick a Children’s hospital or many of them to raise funding for? This way almost every child needing help can apply to the fund? They have some Known houses, like the Ronald McDonald House and those are always looking for funds too. This is a great way to raise money and have it go to the right people too. I really hope you consider something like this in your area. If not already there, then the nearest Children’s hospital would be grateful if you were to help raise funding for a house like that around where you live. You can ask there administration for help in starting this too. Good luck and God Bless

Carol asks…

More ideas to fund the health care of rich children?

I had this one…but very little interest:

Bake sales?
Car washes?

And on the radical side:
have their parents pay for it?

On the current path:
Raise taxes?

admin answers:

Why don’t you concentrate on the poor kids.

Susan asks…

Any ideas for an advocate poster dealing with children?

I am doing a project for my child development class that deals with advocating problems that children have to deal with today and how we can solve and help the problem. I have some some obvious ideas such as poverty, health care but I am sure other peoples mates are doing them. I need help comming up with something original. Please help.

admin answers:

Make a collage with child labour pics. Headline: For children, only play is work! You can fill it by supporting evidence informing that max development in first five years. Hence kids who lack playing then are unable to be functionally literate and intellectual in adult life. Also add that kids assisting their parents- in farming and other crafts, will not be a part of this evil, as they are picking up the threads of the trade and not working in unhygenic, socially unhealthy environment, that would be detrimental to their overall development. Also, they are spending plenty of “quality” time with their family.

Your Questions About Is Soy Bad For Your Thyroid

Carol asks…

Are certains food/drinks bad for your thyroid?

I heard that soy milk can mess up your hormones and your thyroid? I have an under active thyroid and I’m concerned that certain foods could worsen it.Any ideas?

admin answers:

According to the Mayo clinic, there’s no evidence that people with hypothyroidism should avoid soy. However, if you have an underactive thyroid most likely you are taking synthetic thyroid hormone replacement, as I am, an dsoy products can interfere with the absorption of the synthetic hormone. Here is the information you need, from a very reliable source, the Mayo clinic:

The important thing to remember about hypothyroidism and diet is that certain foods, supplements and medications can impair absorption of synthetic thyroid hormone. These include:

Iron supplements or vitamin supplements containing iron
Calcium supplements
Soybean flour
Aluminum hydroxide, a popular antacid
Sucralfate, an ulcer medication
Some cholesterol-lowering drugs, such as cholestyramine and colestipol
The best advice is to take synthetic thyroid hormone on an empty stomach and several hours before or after these particular foods, supplements and medications to avoid potential interactions.

Here is the link.

Lizzie asks…

Soy – Good or Bad? I heard soy is bad for people with Hashimotos Thyroiditis. I’ve also heard that’s a myth.

Are there any doctors, patients or nutritionists who would like to weigh in on this? Does the soy interfere with the absorbption of thyroid medicine (in this case, Armour Dessicated Thyroid)?

What if you waited a few hours after taking your thyroid medicine to eat the soy? Would that make a difference? Or is soy just plain out bad for anyone with a thyroid condition, no matter when you eat it in conjunction with taking your meds?

What if the person suffered premature ovarian failure due to the Hashimotos and had early menopause in her mid-30s?

Soy is supposed to be good for menopausal symptoms, but was just wondering if this was in conflict with the thyroid condition that caused the early menopause in the first place.

Thanks in advance to anyone who replies with any info about this.

admin answers:

Soy is one of the many foods that is labeled a goitrogen. From what I read it does not seem to effect everyone. I think if your iodine intake is borderline it may effect you.

Goitrogens work by interfering with the thyroidal uptake of iodine.

I can not tell you if it would be good or bad for you. I can suggest you let your doctor know, so they can take blood tests and see if it does effect your thyroid. I think I read do not take soy within 3 hours of taking your thyroid medication.

Helen asks…

Do u think soymilk and soy products are bad for u ?

I read an article recently , it’s a long article and I can’t remember all of it but it said that soy has toxins , affects your thyroid …says that soy is a multimillion dollar industry …also that Asians did not use soy as a food for hundreds of years and that’s a myth , they used it as a fertilizer .

Just wondering u read anything on soy ? I used to drink soy pretty often but I don’t use any soy stuff now very often …not becuz I read this but I just havent in awhile , I mostly used soymilk and tofu when I first became vegetarian , I like to use ricemilk . Sometimes I like to eat Chinese food made with tofu

admin answers:

Your Questions About How Much Soy Is Bad For You

Sharon asks…

How much soy is too much?

I’m a vegetarian, nearly vegan, as I don’t drink milk and such, but I heard that too much soy is bad for you.

A lot of what I eat is soy. I eat a lot of the veggie food subs, like veggie burgers, ‘chicken’ nuggets, stuff like that. I recently decided to try out Silk soy milk, because vegetarian or not, I don’t like milk.

So, is this bad, what I eat? Or is it alright? I heard that the reason it’s bad is estrogen? Is that true? Am I doomed? They don’t have rice milk at our store, and I don’t want my dad to have to go out of his way when he shops. (I could get it myself, and probably will, but it’s just easier this way.)
Disgusting is how you spell it, there’s a spell check when you answer. I’m not asking for opinions on how it tastes.

admin answers:

If you like soy products, then eat them.
If you listen to everything the goddamn food nazis say, then even water will one day be determined to be carcinogenic.

Mary asks…

Soy Products *Advice*?

Being a vegetarian,I eat alot of soy..but awhile ago I heard that to much soy can be very bad for you! I seriously don’t want to regret this later on in the future..I was hoping someone could tell me how often is it okay to eat soy products?..like weekly,Like maybe 4/3/2 times a week..I’m not sure whats enough & whats to much! *soy weekly* Can you please help me out?

admin answers:

Moderation is the key! If you eat soy meats, soy milk, and tofu for every meal, of course it could have some consequences. But say you have a bowl of soy milk and cereal for breakfast and a tofu stir-fry for dinner, then you’re okay. Just make sure not to eat the liberally and not to “overdose” on them.

This web page pretty much has everything you need to know about the danger of all these soy products and how to avoid them:

http://www.soyinfo.com/dangers.shtml

So in other words:

“–>Avoid non-organic, genetically-manipulated soy ingredients. See the following web page for more information: http://www.soyinfo.com/haz/gehaz.shtml.

–>Avoid heavily-processed soy ingredients such as soy protein isolate, soy protein concentrate, hydrolyzed soy protein, texturized soy protein. These ingredients are will not provide any significant health benefits and may cause health problems as discussed above. Instead use traditionally-processed soy products such as miso, tempeh, tofu, natto, and soy milk.

–>Use soy products ocassionally. Eating miso soup several times per week and having tempeh or tofu in a dish a couple of time per week is fine. Use other legumes to get the bulk of your protein.”

In a nutshell: too much of anything is never good.
Hope I helped! Good luck!

Steven asks…

In what ways can sushi be bad for you?

I know sushi can be healthy in many ways. But, what ways can it be unhealthy (i.e. what sushi is more fattening than others, is soy sauce a problem, is the rice as a carbohydrate bad?)? Also, how much sushi should be considered a meal for one person (how many rolls, how many individual pieces of sushi — not sashimi)? I’m trying to lose ten pounds and I seem to be addicted to sushi, so any advice would help. THANKS!

admin answers:

About 7 rolls of sushi is about the normal lunch size, but that is combined with the other side dishes like rice and edamame.

Sushi can be bad for you because of the risk of eating raw fish. Raw fish can contain parasites, such as tapeworm, that can cause major health problems if remained undetected.

Also, the fish can contain small amounts of mercury, which has proven to cause birth defects and cancer.

If your on a diet, eat sushi, but eat it slowly and drink green tea with it.

The green tea boost your metabolism, and eating slowly will make you eat less of it. Plus, your eating rice, which is a complex carb, that will keep you full for a decent amount of time.

Your Questions About Natural Remedies For Gerd

Lisa asks…

What are best natural remedies for GERD?

What are some homeopathic or alternative meds for GERD/acid reflux that are safe?

admin answers:

I am not a doctor, so either way you will want to talk to them, but this is what I have to say as a long time sufferer of Acid Reflux (G.E.R.D.)!

Three part answer information, what not to do, and what to do!

INFORMATION!!!!!!
I have a very severe case of Acid Reflux (G.E.R.D.). I have had to go to the hospital for some of the heartburn that I have had because the pain can become overwhelming or your breathing can be effected. It can be caused by Smoking, Drinking Beverages with caffeine (My case), Drinking Beverages with Alcohol, or can be Hereditary

The good thing about G.E.R.D. Is that it can be a temporary thing and can be cured. It is never a permit thing even if you end up with it for the rest of your life it has the ability to be cured.

G.E.R.D. Is caused by too much acid being created in your stomach. This can lead to or cause ulcers, esophagus damage, heartburn and/or damage in the mouth.

WHAT NOT TO DO!!!!!!!!
In most cases, stress is a factor to the reflux if you watch what you eat and reduce some of the stress it will help. If you watch what you eat for about a week you should find relief, if you do not then that is when you definitely what to listen to the doctor. Things to watch for are as follows:

Fatty Foods
Citrus Foods
Foods That Contain Grease
Fried Foods
Chocolate (including any Coco)
Caffeine
Smoking
Alcohol
Tomato Based Products
Lactose

WHAT TO DO!!!!
The two foods that I recommend is Black strap Molasses and Raw honey. The apple is better for night time reflux while these will work for just about all of it. What you will do is take about a tsp. Of whatever one you chose. Molasses being the better because of strength and nutrition, but must be use to the taste. What the substance will do is stick to the sides of the esophagus and do two things, one is heal and the other is protect.
On the healing end, both substances have a healing property in them, and as they sit on the walls of the esophagus they will heal it. This is also helpful if you have a sore throat in the morning from refluxing.
On the protection end, both substances are high in sugar and when acid that is refluxed comes up to that the sugar will neutralize it and it will not longer be a problem at that point.

I would also look to putting Cinnamon and Ginger root in you diet, they have been know to help with digestion and will help you reduce the amount of acid needed to brake down food, therefore causing you to reflux less.

James asks…

What are some natural remedies for GERD?

My boss has it. Has an appt in a month, but since he’s a nice guy, I was thinking to help him out a bit until he goes to the doc.
Thanks
He’s not fat by any means and he doesn’t smoke. He stresses out a lot. Again, he is going to see a gastro in a month, but I wanted to get him something in the meantime. I don’t know who Tony is…
Oh, and he’s been on Nexium for… ever…

admin answers:

My mother was diagnosed with GERD 5 years ago and has suffered severely for the past 5 years. After stopping acid blockers and starting digestive enzymes, GERD disappeared within 2 weeks. GERD is essentially a digestive problem. My mother takes Nature’s Sunshine protein digestive enzymes for protein meals (contains betaine hydrochloric acid), and for non protein meals Sandra Cabot’s digestive enzymes. These digestive enzymes are the same as in the stomach and pancreas but are derived from plants. Alternatively, your boss can increase digestive enzymes in the diet. All cooked foods are devoid of enzymes so a diet high in raw foods is beneficial.

There are some medical conditions that can cause acid reflux including hiatus hernia, asthma, H pylori bacteria, hypothryoidism, diabetes, obesity and pregnancy. I think we can rule out the pregnancy bit lol. H pylori is from lack of stomach acid which is needed to kill of bacteria and parasites. If it is this condition, antibiotics are needed.

I’ll give you a few links to read through.

Edit: Acid blockers should be not be taken for more than 14 day…8 weeks at the most. Ill health is a certainty if taken longer than this.

Michael asks…

Natural remedies for GERD or possibly an ulcer.?

My 47 year old son suffers terribly from stomach pain. The doctor has prescribed omeprazole but he does not have insurance. Any generic or cheaper substitute. How much would diet change help?

admin answers:

It depends on his current diet. I would definitely suggest supplementing with plant enzymes to help digest food. Chamomile is an excellent choice for ulcers. A nice cup of chamomile tea before bed is reported by many people to benefit the stomach and GI tract. Ginger is another great choice for the stomach, and it is very inexpensive as capsule or even the fresh rhizome which can be sliced thin to make tea. If your son would rather not take too many pills, just go with the chamomile tea, 2-3 cups daily.

Your Questions About Vitamins And Minerals In Eggs

Richard asks…

Is it true that eggs lose all of their vitamins and minerals through cooking?and that all thats left is the?

protein and the cholesterol? is it true that in order to,preserve its nutritional content that eggs are best hard-boiled?

admin answers:

Most food loses some nutritional value through cooking, but the egg is still a valuable source of protein, low in calorie, and easy to prepare. Hard-boiled eggs are especially good for dieting, because they lack additional fat, store easily, and can be prepared ahead of time.

The fat in eggs is stored primarily in the yolk. Most fat-free diets recommend discarding that yolk and sticking to egg-whites. The low Carb diets, however, use the entire egg, yolk and all. Tests have shown that the high fat diet leads to quicker weight loss, but the low fat diet, while slower, is healthier. A calorie-counted healthy balance of food is undoubtedly the best method of all!

Linda asks…

What are the cheapest sources of carbohydrates, proteins, fat and vitamins?

In other words, what are the cheapest products to buy to have a complete nutrition?
I was thinking about:
carbohydrates: oat meal and bread
protein: lentils, beans and eggs
vitamins: bananas
fat: butter
minerals: tomatoes

admin answers:

Less expensive source of…

Carbs… Is rice and beans.
Protein… Chicken, eggs..
Vitamins… Fruits and veg (a variety) No one fruit or veg has it all.
Fat… You get that when you eat the meat (a 2 for 1 deal)
minerals… Meat… ( 3 for 1 deal)

However, the key is to eat a variety. As I mentioned before, no one item contains all the nutrients.

Sharon asks…

is there a difference between the number of vitamins and minerals in a raw egg and a cooked egg?

I was just wondering if there is a difference because I have heard and read in some fitness magazines that some people who work out drink raw eggs, and i’ve never really seen a reason why.

admin answers:

No.
“The protein in raw eggs is only 51% bio-available, whereas that of a cooked egg is nearer 91% bio-available, meaning the protein of cooked eggs is nearly twice as absorbable as the protein from raw eggs.”

Blowtorch and tweezers.

Robert asks…

Can anyone offer alternative or complimentary medicine for Genital Herpes?

My friend just called me this morning panicked and wants some more natural ways to treat this STD.

admin answers:

In general herpes needs the amino acid L-arginine to reproduce and you can lower the amount of it, in you re body by using an arjinine antagonist like L-lysine this amino acid compete for absorption with arjinine by taking more lysine the arjinine is flush out of the body as a result the herpes virus has nothing to fed on this way you lower the viral load and the symptoms disappear it works well but is not cure. The dosage is from 2 grams 2 times per day

Your Questions About Alternative Therapy For Depression

James asks…

can you reccomend a herbal, alternative therapy for some depression?

not for me, for my friend, she really is going through a bad time at the moment, and has tried explaining things to her doctor, when i saw her today she was actually shaking with the stress of it all

she is also a new mother but is not breast feeding

can you reccomend something to try to make her feel a bit better, not so down and low and stressed

thanks for your advice

xxx vici

admin answers:

Green tea and you can help by making sure she has some time to herself (away from the baby). The child is very demanding and being her first she was not fully prepared for what is expected. Then have he seek the help of another doctor. This one does not believe in post-partem depression.

William asks…

What are good alternative therapies for bi-polar depression?

What are good alternative therapies for bi-polar depression?

admin answers:

Bipolar cannot be adequately treated without medication. Lithium is an effective treatment, and it is a naturally occuring compound. People are afraid of meds because there are risks, but it is thought that NOT treating bipolar is risky too, because of progressive brain damage from the illness itself.

Here are my bipolar survival tips (including a lot of non-medication tips).

#1 You need to take the meds as prescribed. You can’t miss. A lot of people forget from time to time, and the pills can’t work if you forget to take them. There are pill boxes with little alarms on them. If your symptoms are getting bad, you need to call up your psychiatrist for a med adjustment. You may never get complete relief, but you will need to try things maybe for a few YEARS to be sure you can’t tweak things to a really good place for you.
#2 You probably will need the support of a counselor all your life. You have to learn to cope with stress better than most people, because stress makes the bipolar symptoms a lot worse. You will also have to make big efforts to keep a good social support network. To avoid burning through people, make sure you apologize sincerely and often if you go off on them or ignore them due to symptoms. You may want to join a support group with other people with mood disorders, they will give you a break and take it less personally when you relapse. Get some books on reducing stress. Over time, work your life into a low-stress direction.
#3 You need to keep a routine. Get up and go to bed at the same time each day. Sleeping in makes depression worse, staying up all night makes mania worse. Never take a swing shift type job.

If your depression seems to be more of a problem in the winter, try to get more sun. You could have seasonal affective disorder, or SAD, or your depression could have a seasonal component, meaning you can get depressed other times of the year, but you tend to have more trouble in the winter. A light box is really good if you can afford one (about $300 online, don’t get it at a local store, they will charge more for a light less than 1/2 as bright). Since I will always have a mood disorder, I have put in extra windows, keep the drapes mounted so they don’t cover them, make sure I spend a lot of time in southern exposure rooms, painted the walls peach and yellow, mostly. I even have a skylight, although that was here when I moved in (and I LOVE it, it helps a lot!!!!!)

If anxiety is a component of your depression, try turning the heat up in the house or dressing much more warmly. It is hard to feel anxiety when you are too warm. I was able to cut out ativan use altogether by using this trick. Saved me big $$ too, because pills cost way more than heat. Hot baths work too, and in a pinch, like at work/school, you can try running hot water over your hands. Also, if anxiety is a primary problem, avoid caffeine like the plague. I personally use a lot of caffeine, because the depression is much more of a problem than the anxiety. Can’t win for losing! Also, some cold remedies can cause anxiety and mania, and lack of control. Look for the “agitation in children” warning on the box. Adult bipolar folks can get problems too. Other drugs can trigger mania, too, like steroids (given at surgery I think).

Try meditation tapes like progressive muscle relaxation or guided imagery. They may seem silly at first, but they work!! They help reduce stress, which makes depression worse.
Go out with friends, and if you don’t have any, find a club to join and MAKE yourself go until you actually look forward to it. Isolation makes depression worse. I go to a social club for people with severe mental illness, because I’m ashamed of my disability and don’t want to deal with the “what do you do for a living” question.

Exercise at least 1/2 hour a day, and anytime you feel really hyper or depressed. Exercise is a great mood stabilizer and cuts down on anxiety a lot.

If your mania makes it hard for you to sleep, here are some good “sleep hygeine” tips so you can sleep better. Like go to bed and get up about the same time each day, even weekends. Don’t use your bedroom to watch TV and read and use the computer and all that-just use the room as a bedroom normally would be used. Don’t do stuff that pumps you up right before bed, like exercising and using the computer. (sooooooooooo hard!) You want to use that last hour to wind down-Take a bath? Make the bedroom really dark, cover up the clock radio, even so the light doesn’t shine at you. If you live in the rackety city, use a noise generator (makes wave sounds and the like) to cover up the city sounds. Avoid caffeine in the afternoon and evening.

Put a lot of colorful things around the house, happy type things, and keep the blinds open and let the sun in. Get yourself some flowers. Put on some nice clothes. Make a list of things that make you happy. Here’s some things on my list: A basket full of fluffy kittens, bread fresh from the oven, Fireworks popping on a warm summer evening, The first fireflies of the season, the scent of Jergen’s cherry almond lotion, The crisp sound of a saltine cracker breaking, fresh sheets on the bed, flicking a topwater lure out onto the morning-still lake water, etc. Use all your senses and read that list when you are breaking down.

Work on time management if being overwhelmed and late for things and too much to do is getting to you. Cut back on other responsibilities temporarily so you can spend more restorative time with friends and family. Ask for help when you are really having symptoms. You have to learn to be humble here, if you need help, you need help.

You got a significant other? Extra physical touch is very helpful. Most people in the US or UK are touch deprived, so hold hands more, hug more, give shoulder rubs, etc. A pet is good to cuddle with, too, if your home situation allows you to get one. (I’m an animal lover, don’t get one if you can’t commit to it for 15 years)

If your bipolar is severe (poorly controlled by meds) then consider asking for help from social services. My county offers classes and there is also a consumer run drop in center, which is a fun club for people with mental illnesses run by people with mental illnesses. We play cards and pictionary and do crafts and take trips places, etc. The drop in center has helped me more than anything else, except the pills. Social support-so important!!

Go to bipolarworld.net and read all of Dr. Phelp’s (Ask the Doctor) stuff, including the links to his site. You can learn a lot from him, he’s a bipolar specialist.

I have really really severe psychiatric symptoms from bipolar disorder and post traumatic stress disorder. And I am able to control my behavior most of the time even when I am suffering, and able to feel quite a bit better using some of these tricks, because the meds have only been partly effective for me. I am in agony a lot of the time, really unstable. If I didn’t do stuff like the above, I would be in an institution for sure. So hopefully some of these things may provide some real relief for you.

Susan asks…

What alternative therapies have you tried for Depression?

I really really want to get better from depression and will try just about anything!

I’m interested to hear what other people have tried besides antidepressants (I’ve been on lots, none particularly help much) and whether or not you thought it helped :) Money isn’t an issue, I just want to get better.

Thankyou

admin answers:

Exercise: gets your endorphins going

Though process: think yourself out of it. Tell yourself things aren’t that bad. I actually read this book: Mind over Mood

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0898621283/mindovermood-20

Helpful and interesting

Psychotherapy: Meeting with a therapist is sometimes the best, it helps to be able to talk to someone about everything you are going through.

Natural supplements: St. Johns Wort, a natural herbal remedy thought to enhance mood, also vitamins and eating healthy has bee pr oven to help mood

ECT or electroconvulsive therapy: this is a very serious treatment, and is thought of to be a last resort, it used to be used for schizophrenic patients, but has proven to be useful for depression

Acupuncture and Mediation or Yoga: known to relax and possibly (temporally) improve mood.

Light therapy: this is mostly used for SAD or seasonal affective disorder, meaning you become depressed in the winter when it is darker and less amount of sunlight. There are special lights you can purchase that can help with light deprivation.
