Where do I go from here? This is the most common question asked by anyone who had been doing Pilates for a while. You might have taken 1 on 1 session for some reasons like chronic pain or for just for general health and fitness. Or you might have been taking group lessons and had a change in work schedule, which makes it hard for you to join your regular group classes.

Although it might seem rather intimidating to embark on a D.I.Y Pilates program on our own, it is actually quite a fulfilling journey. And once you get into the hang of it, it is both easy and simple. You are taking over the responsibility of looking after your own health and fitness. As long as you are committed and serious about your program, you can see significant results from this D.I.Y program.

Here are 3 tips to get you started:

1. Get a Pilates Professional
But you are not alone on your D.I.Y journey. You can seek the help of a qualified Pilates instructor to assist you on your program plan. There are a number of Pilates studios that offer this service for a small fee.

Always make sure you are familiar with the machine set up safety rules and apply proper form and technique before starting your program. If in doubt, seek the help of a Pilates professional. Ask questions to make certain you understand your program and the routines.

You can also compliment your program with mat exercises at home. There are some very good DVDs you can purchase that will help you at home. Just check that it is appropriate for your level.

2. Compliment With Machine
Most people prefer Pilates mat exercises over the reformer because it offers more versatility and flexibility. And since most people don’t have the equipment at home because it takes up too much room and is expensive to purchase, the ultimate choice is still the mat.

With a mat, you can pull it out and perform the exercises whenever it is convenient for you, without having to step out of the house. However, there are certain limitations to doing mat exercise. No matter how you take mat exercises, you are merely working with the weight of your body.

You need resistance to challenge muscular strength and endurance. This resistance must be more than your body weight. And we definitely do not intend to increase our body weight just for the sake of taking up this challenge. Hence, mat exercise does not offer significant improvement in these areas.

3. Claim Ownership of Your Health
When you start on a DIY Pilates program, you start learning seriously how to do them on your own. You increase your knowledge and understanding of both your body and the exercises that are needed to challenge it.

As you improve your skills and your ability to perform the routines with ease and confidence, you are reaping the results of your program. You and your body become more connected and more intelligent.

There is a strong awareness. What you learnt through this DIY journey stays on. Your DIY program is not restricted to just this program. It can be modified, add on and changes made to suit your increase strength and stamina to challenge up at a different level.

How many times have you not stepped into class, thinking of work, chores to be done, kids at home and more? It is hard to switch off but doing DIY Pilates on your own, changes that. You are forced to take charge of your program and your health.

There are more great reasons on what DIY Pilates program can give you if you take up the challenge. But that is for you to go find out. Once you embark on this journey, you will wonder why you had not thought of doing it sooner. Because it works!

If your workout routine and diet do not seem to be getting you anywhere, it may be time for a personal trainer. This type of professional is often used by celebrities to get in shape and stay there, but it is often possible for the average person to do the same. You might assume that you cannot afford this option, but there are a few ways that you may be able to save money on the services of a personal trainer.

One of the best ways to get in touch with this type of expert is to contact a local gym. In fact, many gyms offer the services of a personal trainer with a membership. You typically get to meet with them once or twice a month for no extra charge, and can then hire them for extra sessions if desired.

Some gyms also have them walking around while people work out, allowing you to ask a quick question or be shown the best way to use the equipment. You may even be able to talk to a personal trainer before you join a gym, as some offer free weeklong memberships, during which time you have a meeting with a workout expert.

If you have decided that it is worth it to pay for the help of a personal trainer, but you do not have much extra cash, consider some ways to save. You can ask for a group session, in which everyone in the group puts in a little money. Clearly, this is a small sacrifice for each person, but it adds up to a good amount for the trainer, resulting in a win-win situation for everyone. Of course, you will not get a lot of time with the personal trainer through this route, but it should be enough to ensure that you going the right direction.

Perhaps you want a little extra time with a personal trainer, but still do not want to pay the full price that an individual session demands. In this case, you should consider getting a session with one other person, called a semi-private class. This will ensure that you get much more attention than in the group, without the cost of a one-on-one. You are sure to get any questions answered with this solution, permitting you to get the help of a trainer without paying more than your budget allows.

One of the best ways to change your routine a bit is by checking out exercise DVDs, as there is a huge selection available. You can purchase these at most stores or online, or even rent them at your local video store, allowing you easy access to new workout routines.

If you want to do yoga or Pilates one day, and then circuit training or heavy weight lifting the next, you can typically do so with a video. You can even choose the best one for your situation, as there are prenatal, postnatal, and advanced fitness videos available, to name a few of the most popular kinds.

Most fitness magazines also feature at least one new routine each month, though the majority actually include more than that. In fact, you can usually find at least one new cardio routine, a new toning workout, and a few shorter routines that target certain areas of the body, all in one issue. This allows you to constantly change it up, even if you only get one fitness magazine per month. Imagine the number of new workout routines you could get monthly if you subscribed to a few publications. You could likely start a new routine every few days, or at least every week, so consider this plan of action if you get bored often with your exercise program.

There are plenty of fitness websites that feature different workout routines, allowing you to get a new one quite often. Most sites are free, and include not only routines, but also helpful articles, photos, and advice columns that offer tips. The workout routines that are available on most sites are developed by personal trainers, weight lifting champions, and even average people who have managed to lose lots of weight or gain muscle through their own exercise program. Give their advice a whirl before deciding whether it will help you achieve your workout goals.

One of the downsides of working out constantly is that it can get boring, which leads to most people quitting altogether. Clearly, this would bring your weight loss or muscle gain to a halt, allowing all your hard work to go to waste since you need to exercise continually to keep up the success. Thus, you should consider checking out these resources for new workout routines, especially since most are free and easy to find.

Pilates is a very good fitness exercise to fight off stress, muscle strains and sprains, but also helps you gain strength, flexibility and endurance.

There are many more benefits to Pilates than there are disadvantages. But Pilates isn’t very widely used as it has been publicized as a fitness method intended only for the weak or sick, but quite the opposite is true.

The benefits of Pilates:

Pilates should be practiced for some time before we reap the benefits. There are numerous benefits; here are the main ones:

- Pilates is an improving-posture exercise which works the torso and thighs – perfect for toning and strengthening muscles.

- Pilates trains your muscles correct positions – preventing injury when working hard.

- Pilates relaxes muscular tension and muscle stiffness, it is relieved effectively and smoothly.

- Pilates provides psychological relaxation – it helps the evacuation of stress, particularly through the importance of breathing

- Pilates improves physical fitness – the physical benefits are numerous, such as gaining strength, flexibility …

- Pilates relieves joint problems – this gentle technique is a good way to relieve back pain, sciatica and other joint pain. To some extent, we can expect a correction of scoliosis, lordosis and so on.

- Pilates provides rehabilitation – after recovering from an illness, it is the perfect technique to get you back on your feet.

Drawback of Pilates:

It is imperative to follow the course of a trained instructor specifically for Pilates. The method is unfortunately not yet widespread in some countries; it is sometimes even less popular than other fitness techniques.

Pilates is a form of physical fitness that has had a resurgence over the past decade. Joseph Pilates of Germany originally developed Pilates in the early 20th century. Described as ‘contrology’, Pilates is similar to corrective exercise or medical gymnastics where the mind controls muscle movement. Pilates is a great form of exercise for a wide range of people. That is why Pilates has quickly become one of the most popular exercise programs in the country.

The foundation of Pilates is based on core strength. Every movement originates from the core and progresses out through the extremities. The core is made up of deep internal muscles of the abdomen and back. Due to the American diet and lifestyle, most people don’t have strong core muscles, which can be one cause of low back pain. When the core muscles are strong, they support the spine and are able to control superficial muscles to assist in movement. The objective of Pilates is to develop core strength, flexibility and awareness in order to support efficient and graceful movement in everyday life. Pilates makes people stronger, longer, leaner and increases the ability to function. Every Pilates exercise stretches, strengthens and relaxes the body to enhance natural alignment.

Joseph Pilates developed traditional Pilates using a wide range of apparatuses to guide and train the body. The original philosophy seeks to develop controlled movements that start from the core. This increases strength, flexibility and control of the body. By providing equipment throughout each exercise, additional resistance builds strength. Traditional apparatus includes the Reformer, Cadillac, high chair, Wunda chair, baby chair, ladder barrel, spine corrector and small barrel. Authentic Pilates encompasses six principles, which are maintained within modern day Pilates as well. These six principles describe how Pilates should be completed and why it should be done to these standards. The six principles are concentration, control, center, flow, precision and breathing.

Pilates demands an intense focus throughout each exercise. The way an exercise is done is more important than the exercise itself. Developing muscle control, improves strength and the minds ability to control body movement. The core is the center of the body. Every movement should originate from the core and flow outward to the limbs. As you develop body control each movement should flow with appropriate transition. Precision allows the exercises to flow into each other. It is more important in Pilates to execute one precise and perfect movement than to do 20 sloppy incorrect movements. Improper movements don’t benefit the body and lose their value. By concentrating on precision of movements, they will become second nature, which will carry over into everyday activities. Much like yoga, Pilates requires a focus on breathing. Breathing increases circulation, which expels toxins and increases the intake of oxygen. Deep breathing is cleansing and invigorating. Pilates requires a full inhalation and a complete exhalation. It is referred to as posterior lateral breathing, to expand the rib cage and engage core muscles without changing or impeding movement.

The Pilates principles define how Pilates exercise is more about quality rather than quantity. In contemporary Pilates all exercises have modifications to adapt for all levels of fitness to maintain safety or increase challenge. Although modern Pilates breaks from tradition; authentic Pilates does the same exercise in the same order and contemporary Pilates breaks it down into parts and exercises may vary depending upon the day, instructor or clients. Modern Pilates also has added additional equipment such as small weighted balls, foam rollers, large exercise balls, rotating disks, and resistance bands. These are more modern exercise equipment, which provide the same type of resistance training that the classic Pilates apparatus provided. With all of that, contemporary Pilates still holds the basic values and principles as classic Pilates. Whichever style you choose, you will still benefit from developing strength, flexibility, body awareness and muscle control.

One major benefit of Pilates is that it can help ease tension in your body, which is particularly helpful if you tend to sit at a desk 40 hours a week, hunched over a computer at work. It is likely that your neck and back hurt at the end of the day, and though exercising may be the last thing on your mind after work, a quick Pilates routine may actually be just what you need. Most of the exercises involved in the typical Pilates workout can help you loosen up your muscles while also toning them.

A main point of this kind of workout is to fortify the core, which includes the abdominals. While getting a toned stomach is the objective of many people, one of the biggest benefits of bodybuilding with Pilates is the support that you will lend your back. Making your abs stronger can take tons of pressure off your back since the rest of your body will no longer rely only on your back muscles for support. If you are tired of backaches, you should consider adding Pilates to your bodybuilding routine.

There are a few ways to incorporate Pilates into your workout at least a few days each week. One of the most popular ways is watching DVDs at home, as this can fit into nearly anyone’s routine since you can do it any time of day. If you are one of those fitness fans who enjoys working out around other people to stay motivated, you should try a Pilates session at your local gym. You can likely find one that is right for your level, whether you are a total beginner or have at least a little experience with exercises that require both strength and flexibility.

Before you disregard Pilates as too slow or easy for you, try out a class or DVD so that you can make an informed decision. Regardless of your regular bodybuilding routine, you will likely leave the session sore, challenged, and ready to try again in a few days. Obviously, considering this kind of workout is likely to add to your ability to achieve your fitness goals.

It’s time to consider adding in a pilates exercise routine in your daily workouts.

It is a biological process affecting women’s hormonal systems which occur for women aged 40 to 60 years old. In this situation, women undergo hormonal, physical and mental upheavals. The visible symptoms do not manifest in all women though.

Hot flashes, vaginal dryness, mood swings, changes in sex drive, backaches, these are among the most felt and seen symptoms of menopause. From 55 to 65% of women undergoing menopause experience these symptoms.

At menopause, the ovaries start to have lower production of the estrogen and progesterone hormones. The diminishing production is automatically sensed by the pituitary gland which makes it trigger more production.

This causes an imbalance in the body. The fluctuating production of hormones begins 6 years before menstrual periods end and goes on until a year after the last stage. After that, there is a stabilized decrease in the production of hormones.

Yoga can assist these menopausal women and relieve their pain and other symptoms. A fact that is not commonly known is the close relation between yoga and menopause. Yoga provides the mental balance that is disrupted by menopause. The postures stretch and relax the muscles and raise the oxygen level of cells and thus improves blood circulation.

Insomnia, common to the early stages of menopause, is dealt with by yoga too. There are postures that effectively result in a state of rest.

In cases of fatigue and body aches, yoga postures like supported back bends provide the help. These poses open the chest and heart.Yoga can also effectively handle mood swings and depressions. When blood circulation and respiration are restored and enhanced, the poses expand the chest and result in easing these problems.

Yoga also addresses the physical issues of menopause and mid-life like cardiovascular health, bone strength and density, etc.. Yoga’s long-touted stress relief powers come very handy to women at this stage. The mind and body are put or resumed balance.

The mental/emotional and physical burdens are coped with by the women when the discipline they acquire from yoga endows them with control over their mind and body, thus enabling them to control their actions.

In this condition, having power over their minds/actions gives women consciousness of their emotions and keeps them from words or actions caused by the lack of equilibrium during menopause. This hormonal imbalance can be easily managed by Yoga poses, besides allowing women to stay cool and relaxed.

Here are some Yoga postures that can assist women facing menopausal symptoms:

- Goddess pose or Supta Baddha Konasana, which grants recharging of the needed energy

- Adho Mukha Virasana, for emotional control, to soothe mind and nerves and bring down blood pressure

- Adho Mukha Svanasana, a posture that’s among the most effective in increasing blood flow to the brain and counteracting a waning memory

- Setu Bandha Sarvangasana, balances blood pressure and hormonal emission in the body, thus calms the heart, mind and nervous system, and effectively controls mood swings, hot flashes and headaches

These are but a few of the Yoga postures that could assist women coping with menopause. As you can see above, Yoga’s link with menopause is its effect on the biological condition and the emergence of other symptoms in this condition.

Yoga is an ancient Indian form of exercise that helps improve health and fitness. It is also traditionally viewed as a set of spiritual or philosophical exercises that leads a person to greater self-awareness and internal peace.

In India and in many parts of Asia, yoga is used as a means to attain spiritual enlightenment. The word yoga in original Sanskrit language means to control, to join, or to unite.

There are different types or schools of yoga such as Karma Yoga (Yoga of Action), Bhakti Yoga (Yoga of Devotion), and Jnana Yoga (Yoga of Knowledge), and Hatha Yoga. Each school of yoga emphasizes a different aspect of the ancient art.

As a means of meditation, yoga can help an individual increase concentration and heighten the functions of the senses through various body postures and breathing techniques. The various body postures called “asanas” stretch the limbs and the torso.

The stretching helps relax the muscles and increase dexterity. These movements are accompanied by deep, controlled breathing called “pranayana.” The term pranayama comes from the root word “prana” which means breath or “life force.”

As a spiritual discipline, yoga prescribes certain beliefs, thoughts, and behavior that should be practiced everyday. Another form of yoga called Raja Yoga prescribes eight major philosophical thoughts and practices, namely:

1. Yama – Abstention from lying, stealing, violence, illicit sex, and materialism.
2. Niyama – Observance of contentment, purity, austerity, study, and surrender to God.
3. Asana – Regular practice of meditative postures.
4. Pranayama – Controlled breathing as a means to generate internal energy.
5. Pratyahara – Exercise and “reversal” of the internal body organs.
6. Dharana – Practice of concentration by focusing on a single object.
7. Dhyana – Practice of meditation.
8. Samadhi – The “merging” of one’s consciousness with the object of meditation.

However, in the West, yoga is very popular as a means to reduce stress and anxiety and depression. Practitioners of the art claim that yoga practice helps alleviate lower back pain, migraine headaches, symptoms of arthritis and other ailments.

Certain movements and poses also help relieve symptoms of allergic rhinitis and other allergies.

As a form of stress management, many find yoga to be very effective and easy to learn. The breathing patterns allow a person to regain a sense of relaxation while flexing and sweating out the body’s toxins.

In using yoga to manage stress, a new practitioner must be careful not to overstretch or strain the body. The key to yoga is to do slow, smooth movements in close coordination with breathing.

Of course, there are different levels of yoga practice. Since the advanced postures require full dexterity, beginners are only supposed to follow or learn the basic movements.

Some of the celebrities who practice yoga include Madonna, Ricky Martin, Meg Ryan, and Sting. These celebrities were able to maintain a high level of fitness while sculpting their bodies in “Hollywood” form.

In a world that is so full of pressure, fast-paced work, and other factors that adversely affect physical, mental, and emotional well-being, the practice of yoga should be considered as a simple, inexpensive form of physical training and therapy.
