Progesterone Helps Heal Brain Injuries
According to the Wall Street Journal, medical researchers have found that high doses of progesterone can prevent permanent brain damage and speed recovery if administered as soon as possible after a brain injury.
Progesterone, a female hormone associated with pregnancy, is known to protect the fetus and aid in brain and nerve development. Only recently have researchers discovered that it helps protect and heal adults, too.
Approval of progesterone as a medical treatmen is still 6 or 7 years away. But already researchers are making startling new discoveries. Immediately administering high doses of progesterone may also stop damage and speed recovery for stroke victims.
This is exciting news, because until just a few years ago, brain damage was thought to be incurable. Now researchers know that the brain does heal itself, and certain treatments can help. A few years ago it was discovered that vitamin C, injected as soon as possible at the injury site, can help spinal cord injuries heal and prevent paralysis.
